In 2020 Welwyn Garden City will be 100 years old!

We have planned over 100 celebrations to commemorate our centenary year and look forward to celebrating with you.

Our official launch event – Garden City Lights –  lit up the town on 17 and 18 January 2020, the first of over 100 celebratory events taking place through 2020.

Carnival is coming to town on 11 July with activities for all the family in the town centre and a procession with 15 floats and 500 walkers from across the community.

Over 50 of the town’s sports and leisure clubs  are holding events and competitions throughout the year – a true demonstration of Ebenezer Howard’s vision of a town for healthy living.

A wonderful programme of music and performing arts will showcase the town’s considerable talent.

Last autumn 20 primary schools each planted 2020 bulbs and a share of 100 fruit trees in their school grounds, which will bloom this spring in our centenary year.

School children will demonstrate their talent in 2020 in the 4th year of our schools photographic competition – this year’s theme is of course celebrations!

A life sized bronze sculpture of Sir Ebenezer Howard is currently being cast – a celebration of his vision for Welwyn Garden City – ‘a true marriage of town and country’.

To appreciate the beauty of our green space, a 20.20km Centenary Walk will circle the villages around Welwyn Garden City. Four new trails will be launched in our City of Trees project to celebrate the c. 19,000 trees which can be found across the town.

Finally, no 100 year celebration would be complete without a Royal Visit and we hope to be lucky with our request.

Find out more about all the events and plan your year by exploring our site and calendar. We look forward to celebrating with you!

We would like to extend sincere thanks to all our sponsors, partners and volunteers, without whom our fantastic year of celebrations would not have been possible.
