Trail 1 - Town Centre
Our town centre is packed with history and hopefully this trail will give you a thirst to read more about Welwyn Garden City. Incidentally, if you are actually thirsty, there are plenty of places in the town centre to grab some refreshments.
There are many benches around the town so go at your own speed, wave to your friends (don’t tell them the answers!) and see if you can solve the phrase from the letters you collect along the way. If you cannot manage stairs, please return via Hunters Bridge (also known as Waitrose Bridge if you haven’t yet done the Chase!)
Distance approx: 2.4 miles
Time approx: 1 hour at a leisurely pace
Starting point: Waterstones on Howardsgate
End point: The Howard Centre
Wheelchair and buggy friendly
Trail 2 - Narnia Lamppost & the Viaduct
We hope you enjoy this part of the Chase which will lead you along pathways and bridleways, through woodland and farmland to Nature Reserves, historic structures and some sporting venues.
Good luck!
Distance approx: 7 miles
Time approx: 3.5 hours
Starting point: Narnia Lamppost
End point: The Campus
Trail 3 - Stanborough to The Barn Theatre
This trail leads you through town, village and the best countryside around us. It may be muddy in parts and a little hilly, but there are plenty of places to stop to catch your breath with three pubs and two cafes where you can whet your whistle. Be careful around the animals – you may pass by horses, geese and swans and the odd golfer!
There is only one large roundabout to cross, but please take care. The last section is in the woods so please take a torch if you are chasing towards the end of the day.
Distance approx: 5 miles
Time approx: 2 – 2.5 hours
Starting point: Stanborough South Lake
End point: The Barn Theatre, Handside Lane
Trail 4 - Mill Green
A great leg stretcher. On this Chase you will almost reach Hatfield as you head towards Mill Green Museum. Train spotters, fishermen and twitchers will be delighted with this route, as will those who love looking into back gardens!
There are long stretches here where you can really enjoy the wildlife – you may even see a giraffe!
Distance approx: 7 miles
Time approx: 3.5 hours
Starting point: Coronation Fountain
End point: Railway station footbridge
Trail 5 - Town Centre & Lagoon
This Chase takes you on a lovely walk with the contrasting landscapes of the urban town centre and the rural beauty of the lagoon and many other green spaces. This is one for birdspotters and wildlife lovers as well as anyone wanting to learn more about the history of our garden city.
Something for everyone!
Distance approx: 3 miles
Time approx: 1.5 hours
Starting point: Louis de Soissons Memorial
Garden on the Campus
End point: Hunters Bridge
Wheelchair and buggy friendly
