CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF WELWYN GARDEN CITY IN 2020

International GARDEN CITY

Symposium

Celebrating Welwyn Garden City at 100
- A creative exploration of the Garden City Idea

The enduring influence of Welwyn Garden City, and the principles it sought to enshrine, is recognised internationally. We are working on a virtual event in 2021 to bring together expert speakers and commentators from across the world to generate lively discussion and interventions designed to address the 21st century challenges of providing places where people want to live, and can afford to do so.

The legacy and the future of the Garden City and the countless places it inspired will be considered; What went right? What could have been done better?  And above all, how can we apply this practical experience both at home and abroad, against a context of population growth, climate change and the need for sustainable living?

More details will be published as plans evolve.

Welwyn Garden City’s Famous Town Plan

Welwyn Garden City is arguably one of the most beautiful and certainly the best planned towns in England. The man responsible for the much of what we see in the City was Louis de Soissons, its Chief Architect and Town Planner for 42 years – from its inception in 1920 till his death in 1962.
