A town designed for healthy living
Welwyn Garden City, blessed with wonderful clubs, schools and facilities, has produced many sporting heroes including Sir Nick Faldo, David James, Tom Lewis, Jodie Williams and several international players, both men and women, in a variety of sports.
It has also been the nursery and testing ground where others have come to learn and hone their skills, not least Olympic gold-medallist Laura Trott-Kenny with the Welwyn Wheelers on Gosling’s cycle track.

Sport has played an important role in Welwyn Garden City for 100 years. The origins of some of our Clubs go back to the very early years of Welwyn Garden City.
Today it has an excellent range of over 60 sports clubs who offer sporting opportunities for everyone whatever their age or ability. All these clubs along with uniformed youth groups and sports based organisations, expressed huge enthusiasm for joining in the Centenary celebrations during 2020.
While all events are currently on hold, we are committed to delivering as many of the planned events as possible, as soon as we are able, running into 2021. All participants will receive specially designed commemorative trophies or medals or other types of memorabilia.
Invaluable assistance is being given by GLL/Better, which manages all of the town’s major public sports venues and facilities, and Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council are similarly enthusiastic in their support.
