Thank you for your interest but as the Centenary Celebrations have now come to a close, we are no longer operating a Newsletter.

However, maybe you would like to get involved with the following local organisations who also have an interest in the history and preservation of our beautiful town.

Welwyn Garden City Society

The Welwyn Garden City Society

The WGC Society is our town’s civic society. We exist to protect the town’s Garden City ethos, preserve its heritage and oppose threats to the town’s unique heritage. Civic Societies are struggling to survive nationwide. But Welwyn Garden City is a wonderful expression of Ebenezer Howard’s ideal of town-country marriage thanks to Louis de Soissons’ practical vision. As a consequence we feel it is especially important that this internationally renowned town is adequately supported and its fundamental principles championed. Our membership is growing but we serve those members less well than we would like. We need new ideas and new bodies on our Committee. Our existing Committee is too small to oppose the many threats to our town. This is your opportunity to make a difference, and help save one of the world’s most iconic town planning successes. Bringing the Past into the Future

We,

  • Record and celebrate the role of Welwyn Garden City in the evolution of town planning worldwide.
  • Gather, conserve, display and explain material about the town.
  • Promote a sense of civic pride within the local community.
  • Ensure high standards of planning, architecture, and estate management.

Since its formation in 2006 the Trust has:

  • Undertaken 3 Heritage Lottery funded research projects into the history of the town.
  • Obtained almost 700 digital recordings of resident’s memories of WGC.
  • Held major exhibitions, published 4 books, is sole agent for a 5th
  • Updated the film ‘A Brave Vision’ to DVD for sale to the public.
  • Pioneered two Digital Trails tracing the history via walks using a smart phone.
  • Undertaken guided tours for parties from as far afield as China.
  • Worked closely with WGC Society where heritage is threatened.

We don’t have members. We do have supporters, both active and financial.

We want to set up a new project collecting memories for the 1970-2020 period with its social media explosion.
