RHS The Garden Magazine article – March 2018

Here is an article published by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) in their March 2018 edition of The Garden.

Finalists for 2020 show garden

Final judging is underway in a competition for the chance to design a show garden at the RHS Chelsea flower show in 2020, to celebrate the centenary of Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire.

The competition is a highlight of Welwyn’s year-long centenary celebrations. The brief asked designers to create a show garden exploring the enduring legacy of the garden city movement. Welwyn and its fellow garden city Letchworth (also in Hertfordshire) were conceived by victorian philanthropist Sir Ebenezer Howard as a utopian alternative to the squalor of inner cities at the time. The low-density housing and open green spaces of these garden cities remain benchmarks for sustainable urban planning to this day.

The four design teams in the shortlist are Heather Appleton; Emma Mazzullo and Libby Russell; Richard Riddell; and Stuart Towner and Bethany Williams. The winning design will be announced next month.
