WGC 100 Centenary Garden

Garden Design Competition to celebrate Welwyn Garden City Centenary at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2020

What better way to celebrate the centenary of Welwyn Garden City, a town described by its founder Sir Ebenezer Howard as a ‘marriage of town and country’, than by commissioning a show garden at RHS Chelsea Flower Show?

Welwyn Garden City Centenary Foundation is therefore pleased to invite Garden Designers to enter the town’s competition to design a Main Avenue garden at RHS Chelsea in 2020, to celebrate the town’s centenary.  As a long-lasting legacy, the garden will afterwards be re-located to a key site in Welwyn Garden City.  This exciting project has already secured initial funding with budgets set according to RHS advice and the competition is being held in conjunction with the Society of Garden Designers (SGD).

The creation of a Centenary Garden is one of many planned events by the town to celebrate 100 years of the Garden City and its innovative idea of healthy living.   The Centenary Foundation has invited the Marquess of Salisbury to become Patron of the celebrations, and Lady Salisbury will be Patron of the Foundation’s Chelsea garden initiative.   More on the Foundation and the Centenary Celebrations can be found on the website www.wgc100.org.

Any Garden Designers interested in entering the WGC/RHS Chelsea 2020 competition are invited to register their initial interest by completing the application form on the SGD’s website (www.sgd.org.uk/industry-news) by 31st March 2017.  All entrants will then be contacted by the Project Team and invited to the town for a briefing.

Initial submissions in the form of a concept plan and initial costings should be submitted by 3 rd  October from which a short list will be selected.  The shortlisted entrants will be paid an honorarium of £1,000 following submission of further details of their design and a model of the garden for final judging.
