We want to bring the story of Welwyn Garden City alive with two events to celebrate the uniqueness of our Garden City bringing the community together in the heart of the town centre, engaging with local artists and community groups across the town.
The ‘Launch event’ in January will kick off the year of celebrations with a festival of light involving the schools and community groups with lantern parades, audiences wander through an illuminated wonderland – an immersive town centre experience that celebrates the story of our unique Garden City, linking its history with its green landscape. An exciting collaboration between Welwyn Garden City Centenary, the BID and local artists, this magical event will use lantern processions, light installations, performance, music and building projections and the lighting of the Centenary Beacon to bring the city to life in a wonderful 100th birthday celebration.
The ‘Finale event’ will be a street party to bring the community together and celebrate the end of a fantastic year, with live music on stage, parades to showcase the work being carried out throughout the year and a torchlit procession to end with the putting out of the Centenary beacon.
Both events will aim to involve the community as much as possible with locally-based artists and production teams, providing training in most aspects of the event production to leave a lasting legacy for Welwyn Garden City.
The Launch and Finale events and their legacy are dependent on funding being available from sponsors and grants.
