Welwyn Garden City Centenary Foundation

Our Patron

The Marquess of Salisbury

Lord Salisbury - Robert Cecil - 7th Marquess of Salisbury

Robert Cecil, 7th Marquess of Salisbury has enthusiastically agreed to become the Patron of the Welwyn Garden City Centenary Foundation for the 2020 celebrations. The Marquess and Marchioness of Salisbury have long been supporters of many community organisations in Welwyn Garden City and continue to take a close interest in the affairs of the town.

Lord Robert Cecil continues the tradition started by his great-grandfather, James Cecil, 4th Marquess of Salisbury, who was a friend and supporter of Ebenezer Howard and also a strong advocate of the Garden City movement. He was elected to represent Great Britain as Vice President of the International Garden Cities and Town Planning Federation nearly a century ago.

Lord Salisbury lives in Hatfield House, the ancestral home of the Cecils, which adjoins the garden city on the south side.
